Help Tetra Jen Begin Her Next Chapter — Mouth-Painted Cards Supporting Her Independence
You may remember Jen from when I featured her as my Woman of the Month — a woman whose courage, resilience and determination have inspired so many of us.
I first met Jen in 2024 when I worked as Arts Coordinator at Horatio’s Garden, the beautiful garden attached to the world-famous Stoke Mandeville Spinal Unit.
During Jen’s time in the Spinal Unit, I became her hands — and together we spent long Sunday afternoons painting, crafting and creating. It was such a privilege to witness her creativity and spirit, even during those earliest and most fragile stages of her rehabilitation.
When Jen left the Spinal Unit, our connection continued, and I began working with her through my Art With Anna one-to-one sessions, finding ways for Jen to continue enjoying art and creative expression at home.
Then, in February 2025, we began a completely new chapter together:
learning to mouth paint.
And it really isn’t easy — I’ve tried it myself!
But Jen, with her strength, humour and complete refusal to give up, embraced the challenge with incredible determination.
Her first mouth-painted artwork was a beautiful acrylic sunset, created using only a paintbrush held in her mouth. With support from REMAP, who helped us develop bespoke painting equipment and brush holders, we have continued adapting and experimenting so that Jen can become increasingly independent with her artwork.
And she has come such a long way.
We Did It — Jen Has Her MyoCycle!
When we originally launched Jen’s cards, we had one enormous goal: to raise £12,000 for a MyoCycle FES Bike.
Thanks to an incredible amount of generosity, card purchases, donations and people sharing Jen’s story, the full £12,000 was raised.
Jen now has her MyoCycle at home and is using it as part of her ongoing rehabilitation.
For Jen, who became tetraplegic after breaking her neck in a freak accident in 2023, the bike provides Functional Electrical Stimulation to activate her muscles while cycling from her wheelchair, helping with circulation, muscle health, spasms, pain and long-term wellbeing.
Seeing that fundraising target become a reality has been quite extraordinary.
But Jen’s story — and her journey towards greater independence — hasn’t stopped there..
What Are We Fundraising For Now?
Any further money raised through the sale of Jen’s artwork and cards will go towards equipment, adaptations and clever gadgets that can help Jen become more independent in everyday life.
For someone living with tetraplegia, things many of us take for granted can require specialist equipment or ingenious adaptations.
So every card you buy continues to make a genuine difference.
At the same time, Jen’s painting is evolving too. We are continuing to experiment with new techniques and equipment, and we’re already working on a brand-new collection of mouth-painted cards.
